LOS ANGELES –  Mayor Karen Bass issued the following statement regarding the modernization and expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center. Mayor Bass publicly called for the modernization and expansion of the Convention Center in her State of the City addresses in 2024 and in 2025. She has championed the project through key milestones and sponsored state legislation to increase revenue to cover associated development costs.

“Together, we must work to take a bold step toward realizing Los Angeles’ future as a thriving city with good-paying jobs, a vibrant Downtown and a world-renowned destination. It’s time to move forward on the modernization and expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

“This is an ambitious project that will demand creative thinking and diligence from City departments. It is our responsibility to do this in a way that protects our fiscal health — and we will work in partnership with the Council President to implement cost-saving measures, efficiency improvements, and streamlined approvals to ensure on time completion.

"City Hall must continue to break away from the old, failed ways of doing things to open Los Angeles for business. I know my Council colleagues share this commitment to building the future of Los Angeles. I am grateful for their partnership and action to move this forward, and I encourage them to join me in continuing to support the modernization and expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

“This is about more than a building, it is about catalyzing change in Downtown and the entire city and bringing more travelers to our restaurants, hotels, stores and attractions. Tourism is a massive economic driver. The convention business is highly competitive, but with this effort, we are sending a signal that Los Angeles is ready to compete and win on a global scale. Our decision is a signal about the kind of L.A. we are building for future generations. We must move our city forward.”
