LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced another Inside Safe operation today in Rampart Village and surrounding areas that brought more than 35 Angelenos inside and addressed multiple tent encampments. Today’s operation was a partnership between Councilwoman Heather Hutt and Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez. Photos and broll will be available here.

Today’s Inside Safe operation also included a response effort near Virgil Middle School and in Shatto Park. A dedicated part of the Inside Safe Field Intervention Team monitors more than 60 operation locations, building relationships with unhoused Angelenos who come to past Inside Safe operation sites and housing them with supportive services. More than 3,000 Angelenos have come inside thus far through Inside Safe and homelessness has decreased in Los Angeles for the first time in years.

“Our work to save lives continues with absolute urgency. Today, Inside Safe brought more than 30 people safely inside. People who were sleeping in tents last night will be sleeping in beds tonight,” said Mayor Bass. “Thank you to Councilwoman Hutt and Councilmember Soto-Martínez and our many partners for continuing to partner with us.”

“This area in Rampart Village has one of the highest concentrations of homelessness in both our district and the entire city,” said Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez. “Thanks to our work today with Mayor Bass, Councilwoman Hutt and their teams, dozens of residents now have a safe place to sleep tonight and are on their way to receiving the help they need and deserve.”

“Inside safe has proven to be an essential tool in our mission to get our unhoused neighbors the help that they need, and make sure that residents have cleaner and safer streets. Mayor Bass has once again shown that her relentless efforts at bringing an end to homelessness crisis are working,” said Councilwoman Heather Hutt. “My office is grateful for the mayor’s actions, and is proud to continue this work together for residents of Council District 10, and all Angelenos”

Since her first day in office when she declared an unprecedented emergency on the homelessness crisis, Mayor Karen Bass has driven change in how we address homelessness with new initiatives to bring people living in encampments inside. She has also worked to prevent people from losing their homes and to lock arms across all levels of government to move people inside and save lives and restore neighborhoods.

Key results from the 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count:

  • Homelessness in the City of Los Angeles is down for the first time in six years.

  • Unprecedented drop in street homelessness (10% decrease in the City of Los Angeles – the first double digit decrease in the last at least 9 years).

  • A decrease in makeshift shelters (38% decrease in the City of Los Angeles).

  • The number of people who moved into permanent housing is at an all time high.

Tent encampments have come down in every council district, and thousands more Angelenos came inside than in 2022 thanks to action locking arms with the City Council, County and LAHSA. The mayor has worked to improve services provided for unhoused Angelenos coming inside and has also been vocal about the need to make homelessness programs more cost effective as this urgent work continues.
