Angelenos Encouraged to Visit Ready.lacity.gov and Download the MyShake App to Ensure They Are Ready In the Event of an Earthquake
LOS ANGELES – In honor of Great ShakeOut Day, Mayor Bass today joined the Earthquake Country Alliance and leaders from across the state at the L.A. City Emergency Operations Center to highlight the importance of earthquake preparedness to keep Angelenos safe. At 10:16 A.M. today, Angelenos across the city participated in an earthquake safety drill to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” as a reminder that earthquake preparedness is essential in California.
“As L.A. and cities across the country – and the world – experience more frequent and severe weather events, we have to ensure we are prepared for every possible emergency – in L.A. and up the California coast, that means being earthquake-ready,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “This year's ShakeOut Day, when Angelenos across the city participate in earthquake drills at work, school, or home, is an important day to highlight actions we can all take to stay safe in the wake of an emergency.”
Preparedness saves lives during an emergency. The City’s Ready Your LA Neighborhood Program (RYLAN) provides free, easy-to-use tools to help families, businesses, and neighborhoods prepare for a disaster. Learn more at ready.lacity.gov. All Angelenos should also ensure they have signed up for the City of L.A.'s Emergency Alert System at NotifyLA.org.
Earthquake Warning California is the country’s first publicly available, statewide warning system that could give California residents crucial seconds to take cover before they feel shaking during an earthquake, using ground motion sensors across the state. To receive earthquake warnings, Angelenos are encouraged to download the MyShake App.
Preparing Your Home, Business, and Neighborhood

Water: 1 gallon per person or pet per day (plan for 3-7 days)
Food: 3-7 day supply of non-perishable foods like granola bars, crackers, peanut butter, and canned food (don’t forget a manual can opener), pet food, and baby formula
Tools: Shut-off wrench for gas lines, hammer, pliers, shovel, axe, hard hat, working gloves
Battery-operated or hand-crank radio
Flashlight and batteries
Whistle to signal for help
Duct tape and plastic sheeting
Hygiene supplies, toilet paper, wet wipes, garbage bags
Local maps
Blankets and sleeping bags
Extra clothes and good shoes

Prepare Your Business: The Ready Your LA Business Workbook is an all-in-one planning tool designed to help business owners prepare for an emergency, including:
Planning shelter-in-place locations, evacuation routes and other safety protocols
Onboarding, training, and forming an emergency response team with employees
Assessing insurance coverage
Organizing vital records
Sign Up For Emergency Alerts: All Angelenos should ensure they have signed up for the City of L.A.’s Emergency Alert System, NotifyLA.
Download the MyShake app: The MyShake app is the official earthquake early warning app for the western U.S. Depending on the earthquake's location, the app can often provide real-time alerts before shaking begins.
