LOS ANGELES – Mayor Karen Bass, U.S. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and other federal and state officials today visited the Palisades to assess the progress on debris removal and recovery thus far. The EPA has been urgently working to remove hazardous materials from the burn site as part of Phase 1 of the debris removal process. Mayor Bass continues to partner with leaders across all levels of government to help the Palisades rebuild and recover as quickly as possible. Photos and broll available here.

Federal and state officials that joined Mayor Bass today include: 

  • U.S. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin

  • Presidential Envoy for Special Missions Richard Grenell

  • California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) Secretary Yana Garcia

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations Major General Jason Kelly

  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region 9 Administrator Bob Fenton

“I’m grateful to have the support of our federal partners as we work urgently to rebuild the Palisades,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “The EPA is working to complete Phase 1 of the debris removal process while the City is working to expedite permitting processes and cutting red tape so Angelenos can rebuild as quickly as possible. We will get through this together.” 

Mayor Bass announced a path forward for Angelenos impacted by fires to clear debris from their property. Survivors can either select the Army Corps of Engineers to remove debris from their property or hire a private contractor. Residents can click here to start this process.
