LOS ANGELES – The Office of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass released a 2023 Year in Review Fact Sheet. The fact sheet details major accomplishments in her first year in office.
Fact Sheet: Mayor Karen Bass’ 2023 Year in Review
Under the leadership of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, the City has made great progress focusing on efforts to confront the homelessness crisis, make Los Angeles safer, support businesses, build a greener L.A. and improve city services. Since day one of the Bass Administration, Mayor Bass has moved with urgency and unity to address these challenges and others.
While acknowledging that there is significantly more work to do to address Los Angeles’ biggest challenges, the following are some of Mayor Bass’ major accomplishments in her first year in office.
Addressing Homelessness and Housing with the Urgency it Requires:
More than 21,000 Angelenos have come inside since December 2022, thousands more than last year, as Mayor Bass deployed a new and urgent strategy to reduce homelessness.
More than 9,000 units of affordable housing are now being accelerated as a result of her executive directive to streamline their development.
Strengthening Public Safety for Residents and Visitors:
In August, LAPD said 1,048 people applied to the department, the largest number of applications in a single month since September 2020.
Mayor Bass established an Office of Community Safety to prevent crime through community-led approaches to increase safety and wellbeing. Mayor Bass is investing in those approaches and a comprehensive approach to keep Angelenos safe.
Supporting Business and Economic Development:
California’s leading business bank, Banc of California, will be relocating its headquarters to Los Angeles.
Thousands of businesses have opened over the past year in Los Angeles.
Mayor Bass established a small business policy team and issued Executive Directive 4 to support small business creation, development and growth in Los Angeles by implementing practices like the provision of virtual and in-person counter services for businesses looking to open or expand.
Climate and Sustainability:
- Hundreds of millions of dollars secured through locking arms with state and federal partners as Los Angeles continues to urgently lead on climate.
- Building on the work of former Mayors Antonio Villaraigosa and Eric Garcetti, Mayor Bass has been able to deliver progress toward building a greener Los Angeles.
Improving City Services for Angelenos:
Los Angeles delivered 100,000 more services this year than last year.
More than 2,500 Angelenos have been hired to join the City family to address vacancies.
Metro ridership has increased every month of 2023.
Advancing Emergency Preparedness:
Zero deaths and injuries during Tropical Storm Hilary.
The 10 Freeway reopened in days instead of weeks, after a massive pallet fire broke out.
