LOS ANGELES – With protests expected in major cities across the country and in the City of Los Angeles, Mayor Bass announced public safety preparedness measures to ensure the safety of Angelenos while upholding their First Amendment rights to demonstrate peacefully. Under the leadership of the LAPD, a unified command structure remains established to strategically coordinate resources to keep people safe and protect property. Hundreds of officers and deputies are mobilized to proactively position for demonstrations this weekend – violence, vandalism or looting will absolutely not be tolerated.
“The City of Los Angeles is taking significant precautions to keep Angelenos safe today,” Mayor Bass said. “Angelenos who are planning to attend demonstrations this weekend should stay informed, stay safe, stay vigilant and protest peacefully.”
Mayor Bass is in close coordination with state and local leaders to ensure that all available resources are coordinated and pre-positioned to maximize law enforcement and emergency responses. This morning, Mayor Bass was briefed by public safety officials on deployed resources, emerging needs and LA’s strategic unified response.
Preparations include:
- Coupled with the unified command structure, a strong mutual aid agreement is in effect with more officers and deputies deploying to Los Angeles to provide assistance.
- LAFD pre-deployed task forces to assist medical and fire suppression operations around the clock.
- LAFD has held last night’s shift over to ensure the necessary resources to support the city are available.
- An LAFD Advanced Provider Unit is pre-positioned to quickly resolve medical problems in the field without the need to transport a patient to the hospital, freeing up rescue ambulances to further decrease response times.
- All California Highway Patrol officers in Los Angeles County are ordered on-duty.
- Coordinating with Los Angeles World Airports and the Port of Los Angeles to ensure continuity of operations within the Airports and the Harbor.
- City of Los Angeles Emergency Operations Center is coordinating logistics and operations across City departments.
Under Mayor Bass’ leadership, a curfew was issued earlier this week to stop bad actors who do not support the immigrant community and have committed acts of vandalism, violence and looting. The curfew remains in place at night from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following day. For more information on the curfew guidance, click here.
