LOS ANGELES – Mayor Karen Bass and Councilwoman Heather Hutt announced a new Inside Safe operation was launched yesterday in Baldwin Hills. Inside Safe is a new citywide, voluntary, proactive housing-led strategy to bring people inside from tents and encampments, and to prevent encampments from returning. It is one feature in a comprehensive strategy to confront the homelessness crisis.
“The data from January that was released yesterday underscores the urgency that we must move with to bring Angelenos inside,” said Mayor Bass. “I thank Councilwoman Hutt for her partnership in this effort as we continue to scale this program and work together to confront this crisis.”
"To have our first Inside Safe Operation in the Tenth District is a huge accomplishment. It’s been months, maybe years, since some of these people have slept under a safe and secure roof. We will continue to move forward in our goal of getting as many people housing as often as we can, and give people a genuine chance to rebuild their lives and get any necessary help they need," said Councilwoman Hutt. "A special thank you to HOPICs for their backbreaking efforts in making this happen, and thank you to Mayor Bass for creating real solutions to help our unhoused and for leading the City closer to ending its homelessness crisis."
This is the 21st Inside Safe encampment operation throughout Los Angeles. The initiative is responsible for bringing more than 1,300 Angelenos inside. Mayor Bass is moving Los Angeles forward with an urgent and strategic approach to confronting the homelessness crisis, which includes declaring a state of emergency, taking action to dramatically accelerate and lower the cost of building affordable and temporary housing, and moving to maximize the use of City-owned property for temporary and permanent housing.
Inside Safe supports the following five goals:
- Reduce the loss of life on our streets
- Increase access to mental health and substance abuse treatment for those living in encampments
- Eliminate street encampments
- Promote long-term housing stability for people experiencing homelessness
- Enhance the safety and hygiene of neighborhoods for all residents, businesses, and neighbors
