LOS ANGELES – LA Metro Board Chair Mayor Karen Bass today led the effort by the Metro Board to approve $1 million in additional funding for Open and Slow Streets events, including events like CicLAvia, that open streets for people to walk, bike, and roll through communities across Los Angeles County. The funding will support additional events through July 2028.

“As a lifelong biker and native Angeleno, I know how important open and slow streets events like CicLAvia are to our city and the L.A. region. These events connect communities, bring people together, support local businesses, and help us reimagine public spaces in the second-largest city in the country,” said Mayor Bass. “These events are something to be proud of — and something we must protect. I’m proud to lead this effort as LA Metro Board Chair to ensure communities across Los Angeles continue to benefit from these opportunities in the years ahead.”

The additional $1 million follows action taken by the Metro Board in July, when LA Metro Board Chair Mayor Bass directed Metro to identify additional funding for Open and Slow Streets events. The funding will be available for a new round of events leading up to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Board also directed Metro to find permanent funding for Open Streets programming beginning in FY 2028.

CicLAvia organized Los Angeles County’s first Open Streets event in 2010. Metro created its Open and Slow Streets grant program in 2013 to help communities across Los Angeles County host events that encourage people to experience walking, biking, and public transportation.
