Angelenos in Porter Ranch and Granada Hills are urged to conserve water as LAFD and LADWP predeploy crews and City plans to open bottled water sites.

LOS ANGELES – Mayor Karen Bass announced preparations that are underway as the City responds to a potential water outage in the neighborhoods of Porter Ranch and Granada Hills in the San Fernando Valley. City crews are working through the night to mitigate impacts on Angelenos who may be without water, keep communities safe and perform repairs to the system quickly and safely.

“Right now the City of Los Angeles is mobilizing to address the potential of a water outage in Porter Ranch and Granada Hills,” said Mayor Bass. “The City is working to set up water distribution sites if needed. In addition, LAFD and LADWP have predeployed emergency first responders. We will be ready to address this issue as needed.”

Immediate Response:

Earlier this afternoon, water system crews were performing necessary repairs at a vital pump station that serves a water tank in the Porter Ranch and Granada Hills communities. During these repairs, a valve responsible for controlling the water flow failed to open, which resulted in the water supply to the pipes being cut off.

LADWP crews are currently on site and are working overnight as quickly and safely as possible to perform repairs. LADWP urges customers in the area to immediately conserve water by turning off sprinklers, washing machines and dishwashers. LADWP is planning to provide bottled water in pick-up locations within the affected area.

Emergency Preparedness:

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has predeployed and staged water tenders, engine task forces and other resources to the Porter Ranch and Granada Hills with a focus on high risk fire areas. LAFD is in coordination with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to ensure that first responders are prepared to respond to emergencies should they arise. LAPD and LADWP will be increasing proactive patrolling of the areas.

LADWP is initiating coordination with the LAFD to develop a water supply contingency plan while repairs are made. DWP Tankers are already on site. Residents and businesses with medical necessity for water, such as dialysis clinics, are being contacted directly to ensure contingency plans are in place.
