LOS ANGELES – Marking three years until the 2028 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony, Mayor Bass today highlighted preparations the City is taking to deliver an accessible, inclusive and dynamic “Games For All”. In 2028, Los Angeles will make history in hosting the Paralympic Games for the first time and preparations are already well underway.
“In just three years, Los Angeles will make history as we host the City’s first ever Paralympic Games,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “It's so important for our young Angelenos – especially those with disabilities – to see these elite athletes as they show the world what can be accomplished with equal opportunity and self determination. This is an incredible opportunity for the City to support the Paralympic movement and the power it has to uplift and unite humanity. Not only have we committed to delivering accessible Games, but we are also going to leave a lasting tangible legacy for so many of our Angelenos with disabilities.”
“With just three years to go, LA28 remains steadfast in our commitment to deliver an unforgettable Paralympic Games in Los Angeles for the very first time in history,” said Reynold Hoover LA28 Chief Executive Officer. “The LA28 Paralympic Games will be an incredible opportunity to reshape the conversation around individuals with disabilities within the sports world and beyond and has the capacity to serve as a catalyst for progress, inclusivity and global recognition of the world’s third largest sporting event.”
Mayor Bass recently reaffirmed the City’s commitment to ensuring that the delivery and legacy of the Games are inclusive of people with disabilities, including by signing an official Games Host City Accessibility Commitment, developing and overseeing the implementation of a Games Accessibility Plan and by appointing the City’s first-ever Accessibility Chief within the Office of Major Events. The City’s Department on Disability and Braille Institute also collaborated to install Braille translation for the Olympic and Paralympic Flags display in City Hall. Angelenos today are already benefiting from the 2028 Games, as the City’s Department of Recreation and Parks currently provides enrollment in adaptive sports programming for $10 or less at L.A. City Recreation Centers across the city thanks to an investment of up to $160 million from LA28 and the International Olympic Committee.
